On 25 May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation will come into force with the aim of unifying and updating data protection laws across the European Union. The implementation of the Regulation will be the most significant reform of data protection laws in Europe for almost 20 years. The central theme of the Regulation is ensuring that the fundamental right to protect personal data is guaranteed across the European Union.

The Regulation will spell a number of significant changes for the processing of personal data and all data controllers should be ready to comply with their new obligations when it comes into force. The Regulation will also substantially increase the ICO's powers of enforcement, meaning that data protection will no doubt become more central to organisations' operations than ever before.

    Main Topics

    • Existing law and an overview of the history and operation of the Regulation, including the potential impact of the UK's changing relationship with the European Union
    • Key changes under the Regulation, including obligations for both data controllers and data processors.
    • Practical steps which organisations can take between now and May 2018 to ensure that they are prepared for the implementation of the Regulation and beyond.
