What I do
I have a wealth of experience on Governance, Employment,
Education and Student issues and have advised widely on them
at school, FE and University level. I have lectured and
conducted workshops at a regional and national level on a
variety of issues and I also lecture and train directly to
governing bodies of educational corporations on governance
matters.
I am a member of the Education Law Association and the
Charity Law Association and have participated on working
parties reviewing the operation of charities in the area of
human rights and political activities and the role of public
benefit following the enactment of the Charities Act 2006.
Some examples
·
I
advise the University of Gloucestershire on a range of
complex Governance issues following the grant of University
title. These have included the complete revision of the
University’s governance documents, the creation of a company
limited by guarantee and the transfer of the University
undertaking to the new corporate vehicle.

I
advised on the structure of governing bodies, the role of
representative governors, the structure and constitution of
Council Committees and their roles and responsibilities.
·
I
advise on the content of academic courses and ancillary and
trading activities in terms of their compatibility with the
institution’s mission and constitution and charity law
compliance.
·
I
advise on a range of ultra vires issues, the character and
constitution of the institution and the grant of exempt
charity status by Order of the Privy Council.
·
I
advise on Governance, commercial and structural issues
concerning HE, FE and independent charitable schools,
including the merger, takeover and dissolution of charitable
institutions involving considerable dialogue with the
Mergers team at the Charity Commission.
·
I
advised to UCAS on the admissions process to HE, including
advice on all aspects of the student/UCAS/HEI contract,
issues regarding selective admissions, information
processing, verification and equality issues.
·
I
advise on student appeals, the adequacy and quality of
provision of academic courses and supervision of
undergraduate and post graduate courses. Advice on
inter-student relations, anti-social behaviour and
admissibility of criminal convictions and the duty of care
of HEIs.
