Virginia Cooper
Senior Associate
Commercial Litigation

Virginia specialises in dispute resolution acting for large UK and international organisations and regulators in complex commercial, regulatory and financial services disputes.

My Background
I trained and qualified at Veale Wasbrough and joined Bevan Brittan LLP in 2002. I became an associate in 2004. In 2005/2006 I spent 18 months on secondments at Sotheby's and subsequently PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and was made a Senior Associate in 2008.

What I do
I provide concise and pragmatic commercial dispute resolution advice and act for clients in mediations and High Court proceedings. My areas of expertise include major contractual and regulatory disputes, partnership disputes, obtaining injunctions, professional negligence, and judicial reviews.

Some examples
  • Since 2006 I have been acting for a financial product provider in respect of a complex claim which has been brought by the FSCS on behalf of 1800 investor for in excess of £21 million.
  • Advising a major gas supplier on an application for an ex parte injunction to prevent a provider of services essential to their business from discontinuing the provision of those services pending the resolution of an ongoing industry wide dispute as to the terms under which they were provided.
  • In 2007 I led the team acting for E.ON UK plc in its successful appeal to the Competition Commission of a decision by Ofgem. The appeal was the first appeal of this nature to the Competition Commission and Ofgem was ordered to pay E.ON's costs.
  • Acting for one of two partners in an investment banking boutique in a bitter partnership dispute. We negotiated an agreed exit strategy without the need for proceedings and secured for him a share of two very substantial success fees the partnership was due to receive upon completion by its clients of 2 transactions.
  • Acting for a partnership trust in resolving a longstanding dispute without the need for litigation relating to services provided to a Care Home in the period leading up to its closure .
  • Regularly acting for the Law Society in relation to High Court litigation including various applications for judicial review and obtaining urgent injunctions.
  • Representing the Law Society in proceedings for professional negligence for circa £1.5m against a firm of accountants, including attending a without prejudice meeting which resulted in a negotiated settlement.
  • Acting on behalf of a 'magic circle' firm of chartered accountants in defending a formal complaint from its regulatory body
  • Acting on behalf of a “top 5” firm of chartered accountants in claims for professional negligence including those relating to the provision of financial services and tax advice.
