My background
Before embarking on a career in law I qualified as a nurse
and was a senior nurse and first line manager in the NHS and
latterly in the private sector. I joined Bevan Ashford in
1996, qualified in 1997, became an Associate in 1998, and a
Senior Associate with Bevan Brittan in 2007.
What I do
Since 1999, I have worked predominantly in field of medical
and public law, largely in the public sector but more
increasingly in the private and voluntary sectors. My main
focus has been in working with clients around the many
changes and challenges they face in a changing health
economy. I seek to provide pragmatic, cost efficient advice
in a practical context, always with a mind to share
experience as well as expertise. For me, the client
relationship is about trust and integrity matched with a
relentless motivation to exceed clients expectations.
As well
as governance, my work includes being a solicitor/advocate
in complex and often high profile inquests and inquiries. I
am an experienced litigator dealing with judicial review. I
seek to be very proactive in resolving disputes at an early
stage and provide wider advice on the risk areas to enable
clients to best avoid challenge. I also head up the Health
Division’s Children’s Team and sit on two Clinical Ethics
Committees.
Some examples
- Successfully advised and acted for a health trust involved in a major multi-agency serious case review under the Children Act.
- Was part of the team dealing with the Bristol cardiac inquiry resulting in the Kennedy report.
- I train and speak at national conferences on children’s law and services.
- Successfully defended to trial a judicial review case involving arguments around the provision and funding of NHS funded continuing care.
- Advising on a matter in relation to a child in the UK for humanitarian reasons but does not have a carer with parental responsibility and requires health care. This case involves advising on the law concerning immigration, human rights, best interests and the Children Act.
- Advising on a high profile inquest where detained patient died while being restrained.
- Advising on a number of complex care and treatment cases including the Mental Capacity Act including decisions on medical advances for detecting brain activity in patients with permanent vegetative state (PVS).
