My background
Articled Mills & Reeve 1994; qualified 1996 and joined
Capsticks; joined Bevan Ashford 2002; partner 2004. Partner,
Bevan Brittan LLP 2004-.
What I do
I have an affinity with all
things medical and I enjoy working with clinicians to help
them through litigation by explaining the process and giving
robust, commercial advice early on with a clear sense of
direction. It is often forgotten that litigation can be very
distressing for the defendant involved and it pleases me to
still hear from clinicians I have defended. However, that
supportive relationship also means being willing to explain
why a case should not be defended even if that is not the
advice a clinician is expecting to hear. I want to fight
unmeritorious claims 'tooth and nail' but to manage others
to a fair resolution as quickly and as inexpensively as our
present system allows. Bevan Brittan LLP believe in
litigating 'hard and fast' when that is called for, but
'getting the right money to the right people at the right
time' where appropriate.
Increasingly I specialise in obstetric and paediatric cases,
in particular cerebral palsy, or other high-value
neurological, spinal or maximum severity injuries. However,
I maintain other special interests including neurosurgery
and oncology claims and the Human Rights Act. I run the
London Medical Law & Personal Injury team with Head of
Department and London-based Partner, Joanne Easterbrook.
This "ascendant" team is described by the Legal 500 2007/8
as "tough", "practical", "frank" and "truthful" according to
adversaries, clients, medical professionals and the Bar. I
audit the MLPI team across the 3 offices striving for
further improvement and innovation. This compliments my
roles overseeing training, both internally and externally by
means of free monthly training seminars for NHS bodies or
clinicians, and I edit the Claims-on-line monthly e-bulletin
that can be accessed via the "Knowledge" section of this
site. I enjoy working closely with the NHSLA in particular
and also act for a large number of NHS Trusts and Health
Authorities as well as private health insurers such as BUPA
or individual doctors on instructions from their medical
defence organisations. With a broad background as a lawyer
in medical law, professional indemnity, personal injury and
health, I am a regular speaker on current legal issues
including special interests in rehabilitation and patient
safety issues.
