National law firm Bevan Brittan is delighted to announce its recent appointment to advise 11 district councils in Northern Ireland on one of the largest Public Private Partnership (PPP) waste projects in the UK.

The firm’s specialist Waste and Renewables team has been appointed as joint legal advisors with Arthur Cox by Arc 21 (formerly the Eastern Region Waste Management Group) – a partnership of 11 District Councils – to advise them on the procurement of a long-term solution for the treatment and disposal of residual waste.

The anticipated waste infrastructure for the project is likely to include a combination of Mechanical Biological Treatment and Energy from Waste technology. The infrastructure is expected to process up to 600,000 tonnes of municipal waste per year from the region.

The appointment, which was announced last month, comes after Bevan Brittan saw off strong competition from several firms in a competitive tender process earlier this year.

The firm will now act as joint legal advisors to Arc 21, which comprises Antrim Borough Council; Ards Borough Council; Ballymena Borough Council; Belfast City Council; Carrickfergus Borough Council; Castlereagh Borough Council; Down District Council; Larne Borough Council; Lisburn City Council; Newtownabbey Borough Council and North Down Borough Council.

The Bevan Brittan team was led by Partner Chris Jarman and also included Associate Nadeem Arshad and solicitor Dermot Duncan.

The appointment marks one of the most significant roles to date for Bevan Brittan’s market-leading Waste and Renewables team and follows a series of recent instructions including advising the North London Waste Partnership on planning issues for an anticipated waste infrastructure.
