This “excellent” firm accrues much of
its IP work from its successful public sector practice.
Clients rely on the team for its rigorous and
informed approach to commercially complex situations.
Chambers UK, A Client’s Guide to the Legal
Profession 2007
"The team is particularly strong on the
projects side, and is advising Partnerships for Schools on
the IT aspects of the Building Schools for the Future
programme." Legal 500 2007
The lawyers in our team all specialise in intellectual
property and information technology law while at the same
time drawing on their strong commercial law backgrounds.
We support and advise clients in sectors where IP and/or IT
are business-critical. Our clients include hi-tech
manufacturing companies, companies operating in the IT
industry, media companies and companies in other industries
with IT and/or e-commerce interests. We also specialise in
the procurement of high value IT systems and services by
public sector bodies, particularly in the health and
education sectors.
We combine the specialist legal skills required for IP and
IT transactions with a commercial approach to contract
negotiation and the exploitation and procurement of
intellectual property rights.
We recently acted for Biotrace International Plc, a leader
in the manufacture of microbial detection systems, in the
formation of a new joint venture company, Lucigen, with the
Defence Science and Technical Laboratory (DSTL), part of the
MoD. DSTL granted Lucigen licences to develop and
manufacture defence-critical reagents based on state of the
art technology developed at Porton Down. Patent licences
were critical to the joint venture and we worked closely
with international patent agents on the intellectual
property aspects of the deal.
In the IT field we completed a ground-breaking PFI contract
for the provision of financial management systems and
related support services to a collaboration of 12 Welsh NHS
trusts. This procurement involved all but three of the NHS
trusts in Wales and was one of the first collaborative
procurements of IT services to be approved by the National
Assembly for Wales.
