When Lucian Freud’s 1995 portrait Benefits Supervisor Sleeping was sold
at auction in May this year by Christie’s in New York for £17.2m (reportedly to
Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich), it set a new world record price for the
sale of a work of art by a living artist.
