Despite the significant operational challenges faced by many NHS and independent health and social care providers during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the temporary relaxation of the CQC’s inspection regime, delivering high quality and safe care must be the overriding priority for any health and social care provider, with continuous improvement a fundamental element of that priority.

As has been evident throughout the past 5 months, the role of the workforce is instrumental as organisations grapple with the vast array of operational issues on the ground. It is the workforce, coupled with strong and engaged leadership and an embedded culture focused on values and behaviours, which provides the platform for the delivery of exemplary and safe care, even in the most challenging of times. Whilst it is well recognised that engaged staff deliver better care, there is no magic or prescribed formula which guarantees the existence of an engaged, productive and caring culture and enabling organisations to meet the relevant thresholds around the 5 Key Questions which form the basis of a CQC inspection – Safe, Caring, Effective, Responsive and Well Led.

At this Workforce Forum, Jodie Sinclair, Head of Bevan Brittan’s Employment, Pension and Business Immigration team chaired a discussion with a panel of health and social care specialists, exploring some of the key issues. The session covered insights, observations and challenges concerning the role of workforce, leadership and culture in the delivery of high quality care, and what it takes to move organisations from to ratings of ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’, especially in a post Covid landscape.
