  • Autism is a diagnosis with increasing prevalence in Court of Protection cases – but there is often a lack of clarity as to whether or not P has a diagnosis of autism and how this may (or may not) impact their capacity to make decisions.

    In this session, Dr Claudia Camden-Smith, Consultant Psychiatrist, discussed:

    • What is autism?
    • Recent trends;
    • Distinguishing between autistic traits and autism;
    • Diagnosing autism;
    • Is autism and/or assessing autism different in children, young people and adults?
    • Assessing capacity of a person with autism – including any particular considerations to keep in mind and top tips.

    Dr Camden-Smith is regularly appointed as an independent expert in the Court of Protection to provide reports on diagnosis and capacity.
