Assaults in the Healthcare Setting

Claire Jones will discuss claims affecting Trusts arising from assaults by patients on staff and visitors. She will look at types of incident, how we investigate them and how we assess liability and quantum. She will also deal with Pre-action Disclosure and issues of confidentiality and data protection.
Deborah Pyzer specialises in the defence of medical negligence claims with expertise managing homicide claims perpetrated by patients. She will discuss defending potential claims in negligence and pursuant to the Human Rights Act 1998.

PSIRF and Claims

A day in the life of a Cardiac Surgeon

In this webinar Ms Betsy Evans described:
- The reality of working as a cardiac surgeon
- The kind of cases she deals with
- What sort of cases are most likely to translate into potential allegations of negligence.
Ms Betsy Evans is a consultant cardiac surgeon at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. She has a specialist interest in mitral valve repair, AF surgery and trans-catheter valve implantation for aortic and mitral valve disease.
Ms Evans continues to remain active in research and is Principle Surgical Investigator in Leeds Teaching Hospital Trusts currently for two international clinical trials:
- PRIMARY trial assessing the effectiveness of surgical MV repair and Transcatheter edge to edge repair (TEER) techniques in degenerative mitral valve disease
- The APOLLO-EU trial to assess the application of a novel transcatheter mitral valve implantation in high-risk non-surgical patients with mitral regurgitation.

The Darzi Review – Horizon Scanning for Primary Care and Maternity Services

Anna Davies looked at key themes from the Darzi review and the potential impact on the future of primary care and maternity services, including:
- A summary of the review findings
- Primary care services: the “shift” to community based care
- Access to quality maternity services
- Repairing the NHS – a return to peak performance.
Anna Davies is a specialist health partner at Bevan Brittan and has extensive experience in respect of NHS governance and commissioning arrangements.

Case Law Update – Mental Capacity Act 2005
Thursday 3 April
The Court of Protection is an active jurisdiction – with many cases publishing judgments with important clarifications and expansions on the key principles within the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
Rhys Hadden from Serjeants’ Inn Chambers considered:
- Key case law and important updates from the past 12 months
- Any updates on the revisions to the Code of Practice to the Mental Capacity Act 2005

Joanne Easterbrook was joined by Dr Jim Gray who focused on obstetric and neonatal/paediatric cases. He covered meningitis, sepsis and acute chorioamnionitis looking in particular at:
- How these bacterial infections work
- The effect of antibiotic therapy
- Martha’s law
- Sepsis Six
