Many local authorities have recently received a demand for copyright licence fees from the Motion Picture Licensing Company (MPLC) if they show free-to-air broadcast TV to staff, service users or the wider public.
In this session, Wesley O'Brien and Roisin Bennett-Odlum discussed:
- the recent change in copyright law that opened the door for the MPLC to make this demand;
- whether the demand is legitimate; and
- the circumstances in which a fee might be due and how local authorities should respond,
- Wesley and Roisin also talked more generally about the copyright licences that local authorities need in place in order to show, play or use film, TV, music and other media content in relation to the delivery of services to the public and for the benefit of staff.
