I am a solicitor in the Information Law and Privacy team. I advise both public and private sector organisations on data protection, Freedom of Information Act, Environmental Information Regulations, Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations and confidentiality issues. I work on a wide range of matters, including advising on Freedom of Information exemptions, drafting and reviewing commercial agreements and policies, dealing with subject access requests and assisting clients with complex data protection queries.
Before qualifying as a solicitor I worked in the health sector for many years; this puts me in a good position to understand the needs of our clients and the wider context of many of the issues I am asked to advise on.
Matters I have been involved in include:
- Assisting NHS Trusts on complex FOIA requests, including for high profile investigation reports and advising on the applicability of exemptions in relation to a request for training materials that had been developed but not used by an organisation on a highly contentious subject;
- Drafting a comprehensive WhatsApp policy for a large NHS Trust where employees were using personal devices for work matters;
- Advising on the use of car trackers and their use in employee disciplinary investigations;
- Advising a range of public and private sector organisations on complex subject access requests, often in light of ongoing or prospective employment tribunal matters;
- Drafting data sharing and data processing agreements;
- Reviewing data protection compliance and assisting organisations on both outsourcing and insourcing data heavy services;
- Assisting organisations with general GDPR compliance, including reviewing policies and processes;
- Advising on PECR and marketing compliance;
- Guiding a large NHS Trust through the process and merits of being joined to a FOIA Tribunal case, where the ICO had previously upheld the Trust’s decision to withhold certain information;
- Preparing bespoke training materials for clients on a variety of data protection related matters.
