Decarbonising the NHS estate is crucial to delivering on its net zero targets. Estates are often dependent on gas, but transition is made complicated by the need to ensure constant availability and resilience. Others in the health and care space are experiencing similar challenges.
Heat networks (whether an estate’s own or connection to a wider district energy network) can offer effective solutions but also bring their own challenges (including potential for regulatory compliance requirements and overlaps with existing PFI arrangements).
Our extensive experience of working with the NHS and wider health and care sectors, combined with our expertise in the heat network, and retrofit sectors means we are ideally placed to support those in the sector on their path to decarbonisation.
Our Points of Connection service provides free information for NHS, health and care bodies who have, or are considering heat networks, and focuses, not only on district energy but also on the nexus between this and other priority areas.

We have worked with a major NHS Trust to deliver a range of SALIX funded energy efficiency and retrofit measures including heat network solutions that reduce reliance on gas.
The project included advice on funding arrangements, and contracting for performance guaranteed construction works across a large, complex NHS site, along with interface arrangements and variations to existing PFI agreements.
Following successful financial close, we were further instructed to support the Trust in exploring additional innovative energy sources, including deep geothermal in complex geology, which included advice about national and location-specific regulatory and licensing requirements.
We focused on pragmatic and innovative solutions to enable our client to manage current and future risk on a complex, operational site, while achieving their decarbonisation goals.
